L2D Learn to Discern

The media are powerful forces in young people’s lives. To be engaged and critical consumers, young people need to develop media literacy skills and habits, to analyse media critically on the basis of certain key concepts, to evaluate media based on this analysis and finally to produce media channels themselves.

The Learn to Discern (L2D) project is a project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme whose main objective is to develop these media literacy skills in young workers through non-formal training material. In addition, this project has had among its specific objectives:

• To enhance young people’s ability to use media literacy strategies to enable them to detect fake news and make responsible decisions about the news world around them.
• To inspire youth workers and youth organisations to integrate the strategic use of ICT tools and open source software into education, training and systems to combat disinformation and fake news.
• Improve young people’s skills, such as critical thinking, communication and digital competences, with the use of innovative technological tools.
• Increase the quality of youth work in Europe by modernising the teaching practices of youth workers through the use of innovative approaches in line with the daily habits and needs of young people.

For this purpose, a content platform has been created, which includes a total of 8 educational modules in multiple formats such as printable text, online text, presentations and videos. These educational materials are related to the use of new technologies as a tool for accessing information. The modules include content on social education, digital skills, parental controls, digital detoxification, social networks, etc.

A scientific study has also been carried out to promote access to upskilling pathways for young workers, enabling them to improve their media literacy skills, as well as their interpersonal skills competences, and to progress towards the identification of qualifications and the selection of tailor-made learning provision. The results of this study provide an overview of the most relevant theoretical perspectives on youth media literacy and the disparate youth educational approaches synthesised.

This project has been implemented by 6 organisations from five different countries: Spain, France, Italy, Bulgaria, Estonia and Turkey. AIJU has participated both in the development of the training materials and in the conceptual and technical creation of the learning platform.
